Research Networks
Thematic research networks in Wales - working with AWARD
Nine thematic research networks and four infrastructure support services have been commissioned by the Wales Office of R&D as part of the new research infrastructure for Wales. The aim of the networks is to boost health and social care based research activity in Wales, enabling research teams here to initiate and take part in high quality large-scale research initiatives.
The commissioned Thematic Research Networks (TRNs) are:-
* Children and young people
* Dementia/neurodegenerative disorders
* Diabetes and endocrinology
* Emergency and unplanned care
* Epilepsy
* Learning Disabilities
* Mental health
* Older people and ageing
* Public health improvement
Four infrastructure support services have also received funding:-
* Equality and diversity
* Health economics
* Health information
* Research governance & management
The newly funded networks will be forming strong links with AWARD and the Clinical Research Co-ordinating Centre for Wales (CRCC Cymru) which is being led by Cardiff University under the Directorship of Professor Tim Maugham. The Co-ordinating centre will run an all-Wales professional network of research staff and a network of patients and carers to inform research strategies and activities. AWARD will be providing methodological expertise and advice to the thematic networks, alongside colleagues in the infrastructure support services. Building on the scoping studies that were undertaken earlier this year across a wide range of topics, AWARD will also develop links with those networks that were not successful in this round of funding, in order to benefit from the groundwork that was undertaken and take forward research ideas in these areas.
